Issey Miyake was a rockstar. The Japanese fashion designer born in Hiroshima in 1938 changed the world’s perspective of fashion into a form of design expression. Miyake better fits the description avant-garde fabric sculptor than fashion designer. While a graphic design student, Miyake sent a letter to the head of the 1960 World Design Conference to be held Japan that year questioning why fashion design was not included in their program, making him a pioneer in the acceptance of fashion as a form of design, creating a subtle yet seismic shift in the merging a fashion with its sister disciplines of art and design.
